"Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City," a 2016 book by Inequality: Measurement, Interpretation, and Policy (MIP) network member Matthew Desmond, has been shortlisted for the Kirkus Prize. "Evicted" was nominated in the nonfiction category, alongside five other titles. The other categories are fiction and young readers' literature.

According to the Kirkus website, this year’s finalists were chosen "from 515 young readers’ literature titles, 314 fiction titles, and 325 nonfiction titles." One winner will be announced for each category in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, November 3.

Desmond is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Social Studies at Harvard University. His primary research focuses on poverty, housing, urban sociology, race and ethnicity, work, and ethnography. "Evicted," a New York Times bestseller, has helped bring national attention to the eviction crisis. The Macarthur Foundation named Desmond to their 2015 class of Fellows.
