Inequality: Measurement, Interpretation, and Policy (MIP) network member Matthew Desmond, has received the 2016 National Book Critics Circle Award in nonfiction for "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City."

According to the NBCC website, the awards are given each year "to honor outstanding writing and to foster a national conversation about reading, criticism, and literature." Finalists are nominated and selected by a 24-member board of directors.

Desmond is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Social Studies at Harvard University. His primary research focuses on poverty, housing, urban sociology, race and ethnicity, work, and ethnography. "Evicted," a New York Times bestseller, has helped bring national attention to the eviction crisis in the U.S. The Macarthur Foundation named Desmond to their 2015 class of fellows.
