These lectures focus on the practicalities of designing and implementing Randomized Controlled Trials in China. The lectures will focus on designing RCTs, including choosing sample sites and considering external validity, doing power calculations, developing causal chain analysis plans, collecting data, registering trials, filing analysis plans (before the start of data collection). We will also focus on empirical modeling and econometric analysis when compliance is full and when it is not. Actual data from several projects that have been implemented in China during the past two years will be used in class as part of hands-on training. The challenges of doing (and tricks for succeeding at) state-of-the-art program evaluation in China will be part of all of the lectures.
