Frances A. Campbell is a Senior Scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. During her 30 years with FPG, Campbell has been an integral part of FPG's history of serving as an objective, knowledgeable force for social change to enhance the lives of children and famiies. She has continued to gathr information on the positive influences of early intervention. Her work with the Abecedarian Project, which began with a group of infants in 1972, has followed these children as they have aged into adulthood. Findings from this study are frequently cited by experts and policymakers when discussing the importance of quality early child care. She has also conducted research on how children in Head Start make the transition to public school.
Among her many accomplishments, Campbell served as a member of the White House Conference on Early Literacy and a member of the Pritzker Consortium on Early Childhood Development. Campbell received the 2007 Alumni Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Campbell received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963.
