HCEO is offering a $1,500 prize for the best doctoral dissertation on a topic related to one of HCEO’s 6 networks. In addition to the monetary award, the winner will present their work to the Center for the Economics of Human Development, HCEO directors, and University of Chicago faculty. Winning submissions will be selected by the HCEO directors from a pool created by representatives of the 6 networks.
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to current doctoral students and recent graduates. To be eligible, a candidate must have a graduation date or scheduled their defense between January 2022 and September 2023. If a candidate has not graduated by the submission deadline, he or she must include a letter from an adviser assuring graduation by September 2023.

DISSERTATION AREAS
When completing the dissertation submission, candidates must indicate which network pertains to their research, and provide a brief description as to how it relates to work on inequality in that specific field:
- Early Childhood Interventions: Investigates the early origins of inequality and its lifetime consequences
- Family Inequality: Focuses on the interactions among family members to understand the well-being of children and their parents
- Health Inequality: Unifies several disciplines into a comprehensive framework for understanding health disparities over the lifecycle
- Identity and Personality: Studies the reciprocal relationship between individual differences and economic, social, and health outcomes
- Inequality: Measurement, Interpretation, and Policy: Studies policies designed to reduce inequality and boost individual flourishing
- Markets: Investigates human capital financing over the lifecycle
